Cleaning your gutters certainly isn’t our favorite chore to do, but it is a necessary one. However, many homeowners either procrastinate cleaning their gutters, or forgo it completely. “What’s the big deal?” you may ask. Well, it can be a big one. Not only can your gutters become clogged by dirt and debris, but clogged gutters can also impact other areas of your home as well.
Roof damage
If your gutters are clogged, the water that’s supposed to drain out of it will instead build up and eventually flood over onto your roof and siding. By taking on such extensive water damage, you might find wood rot or mold on your roof later on. A clogged gutter can also be a tremendous weight strain on your roof, resulting in broken shingles or an entire roof collapse.
Foundation cracks
When that same water overflows onto your roof, it will also fall down to the bottom of your home, impacting your basement and your foundation. When water pools around your home’s foundation, it can cause it to expand and, eventually, crack, compromising the building’s structural integrity.
Pests
Pests love debris. It’s the perfect place for them to create nests. From birds to mosquitoes, all sorts of outdoor pests may try to find a home in your gutters if you allow them to be clogged up with sticks and leaves.
Damage to the fascia
The fascia is a wooden board that is mounted at the point where your home’s roof meets its outer walls. You can usually see it on the front of your roof’s overhang. It also is where your gutters are placed, which means the water overflowing from your gutters will ultimately come into contact with your fascia, resulting in mold or rot.
Clogged gutters can lead to an untold amount of damage to your home. That’s why it’s always best to clean them out before these problems arise.
